That prevented the recording from descending intomidnight oil-burning party sessions. He came up with 40 tracks, now whittled down to twelve, fat-free punk zingers. As a result, criticism of Best Coast has lacked depth. Reviews of their albums often sound like goofy weather reports, or For Dummies guides on their purported influences. I decided to buck this trend and consume the Best Coast canon like a proper music snob, looking for a deeper understand of a band that has, for far too long, been microscopically examined by lifestyle-journos prattling on about cats, sunshine and Cosentino’s lack of literary prowess.
Being from the Valley myself, I also felt uncomfortable with the assumption that we’re all empty-headed caricatures of Spicoli or Cher.

Search WAVVES The word ‘brat’ has followed Nathan Williams around for almost a decade, but at the age of 30, with a fully-fledged business to his name, as well as the ongoing success of band Wavves, his rebellious streak has proven not just purposeful but pretty damn inspiring. The San Diego native knows how to play the system, so when the major labels came knocking a few years ago looking to turn Wavves into the next so-called saviours of radio rock’n’roll, Williams and bassist Stephen Pope made sure they used it to their advantage.

Despite having formed 25 years ago, the group show no signs of slowing and continue to delight fans with career spanning set lists. Having so much material to choose from can be a tricky decision, yet the cheers from the audience are good indication that they made the right choices with the likes of ‘Social Suicide’ and ’21st Century Digital Boy ‘. They have always struggled commercially in the UK yet their shows are always attended well and the band are clearly grateful to the fans who continue to support them.
Beneath the ominous fragmented backdrop they rock out through a two hour set which keeps the crowds engaged, cheering and moshing. Big finish ‘Infected’ leaves the band knowing that despite not selling mass amounts of records in Britain, they are always assured to sell gig tickets.

Wavves fans An unlikely success story, Wavves were the undisciplined, ramshackle, lo-fi brainchild of San Diego counter-culture hero and skateboarder Nathan Williams. He was 21, working as an office clerk and writing a hip-hop blog when he started making primitive bedroom recordings of his songs on an old cassette recorder and circulated them on the Internet. Their raw DIY charm and crude energy, offering resentful messages of disenchantment and gloom, caused a major stir online and Williams released a constant stream of new material to further fuel interest.
With Williams joined by drummer Ryan Ulsh, it resulted in the debut album ‘Wavves’ which included tracks like ‘California Goth’ and ‘Beach Goth’ attacking goth fashion. Second album ‘Wavvves’ followed, although Williams’ erratic behaviour on stage caused some notoriety. There were line-up changes, too, with Wavves becoming a trio of Williams, Stephen Pope and Billy Hayes soon to be replaced by Jacob Cooper , releasing their surprisingly sophisticated third album ‘King of the Beach’ in

Each of Farman’s blog posts typically attracts only a few hundred to 1, readers, but this post, “Blood, Sugar, Sex, Dickheads,” racked up about , views. Although she says she was contacted by multiple news outlets after her blog post went live and she turned down most of their requests for interviews , it was the effect her story had on other victims that she finds most moving. She says she received hundreds of Facebook and Twitter messages, in addition to comments on her blog, from men and women who wanted to not only offer their support but also share their own experiences — many of which they’d never previously shared.
It was about eight months since she’d separated from the band, with which she had danced and played the marimbol for nearly a decade. Torres says ongoing mental and emotional abuse caused her to spiral into depression. From there, Torres received a deluge of emails, blog shares and messages. Consisting of four men and three women, the group included Torres’ nephews, David and Hector Flores. Heavily influenced by a traditional Mexican musical style called son jarocho, the band embraced an eclectic array of styles including punk, cumbia and folk.
The band, which in addition to performing also led educational workshops on topics such as race and identity, privilege and power, intended to address important issues in an effort to “better the world,” Torres says. But soon, Torres says, she was the one facing oppression. As a mother and the oldest one of the group, she was restricted from media appearances so that the band could maintain a youthful image, she says.
She adds that the group’s men had created a “bro space” and routinely silenced, criticized and bullied the women, and that she was ostracized for occasionally being late or having to miss practice in order to be with her daughters. At one point, Torres says she tried to start a separate, all-female band with the women in the group, but the men called the move a “conflict of interest” and halted that effort.
So in March , Torres confronted the group about what she felt were misogynistic actions.
Reuniting It all started a few months back. My Mom told me “Hey Stupid, there’s some mail for you”, and threw a postcard sized flyer at me. She handed it to me, totally didn’t throw it. The card was inviting me to come celebrate the 5 year reunion of the class of Providence College.
