Misconduct What is educator misconduct? Misconduct occurs in various forms and ranges in severity from allegations of direct harm to students such as physical or sexual abuse to an act detrimental to the education profession such as falsifying documentation of continuing education courses or cheating on a professional exam. For the most part, misconduct by educators occurs either on the school campus or with members of the school community, but can also be something that happens outside of the school environment and does not involve students. Who should I contact if I believe an educator has acted inappropriately? If the person of your concern is a teacher, contact your school principal or administrator so the school’s administration is aware of your issues or concerns. If the person of your concern is a school administrator, contact the local district office of human resources, charter school administration or private school administration. Every school district, charter school and private school has its own process for reviewing alleged employee misconduct. Often this review is conducted by the Office of Human Resources, Personnel, Office of Professional Standards, and in some school districts, the school’s police.

A schoolgirl had run off with one of her teachers. At first there was the worry that the teacher might have killed her but then the story changed as CCTV pictures showed them arm-in-arm as they left the UK on a ferry to France. Now they were probably hiding somewhere in France, perhaps in a cheap hotel, perhaps sneaking out for walks together, kissing…. A fifteen-year-old girl and her thirty-year-old lover.

In the schools I visited, everyone was talking about it because everyone, I suspect, had an investment in the story. Every student had imagined the romance of falling for a teacher and every teacher had imagined what it would be like to run off with a student.

10 key questions for high schools

With the onset of adolescence, teens spend less time with family and more time with peers. In the early teen years, mixed-gender groups predominate. By mid-teens, up to two-thirds of high school students report they have dated or are in a romantic relationship. Having a boyfriend or girlfriend in high school can have significant effects on a teenager’s social development and personal identity.

Sarah Van Zanten, 15, was lying on the floor, an ice pack on her aching ribs. For a moment, she had no idea where she was; then her boyfriend’s face came into focus.

Things might not end well. Is it possible that you’ll have a loving, mutually respectful relationship with your professor? But it might not be a good idea to assume that it’ll play out that way. Not to be too pessimistic, but it’s rare that any sort of romantic relationship, no matter how casual, will end with neither party feeling hurt or upset.

Do you really want to risk having your grade in the hands of an angry ex? Other professors might find out.

Dear Mom of High School Freshman

Dear Mom of High School Freshman Dear Mom of High School Freshman, It is hard not to feel, in those weeks leading up to the first day of freshman year, that you and your child have finally hit the big leagues. High school is, in many ways, a break with everything that has gone before. It can seem overwhelming, almost too much.

a teen dating violence and abuse prevention curriculum high school edition.

Such is the case here, and thus I somewhat question the motives of the author of the post, Kelly Anders. Asking the question creates the illusion that there is a real controversy. I addressed this question a long time ago, in an early post here barely seen at the time but among the most frequently visited since. Dating a student is a professional breach of trust, and one that adversely effects the integrity of the entire educational institution….

A teacher always has superior power over any student by virtue of his or her position of authority, and it is an abuse of that power to use it to entice students into dates or bed… [It] is naive to ignore the extended conflicts such relationships create. Will the professor consciously or subconsciously be easier on the friends of his student lover if they are in his class? The fact that the question can be asked shows that the situation should not occur where it can be asked.

The pressures of high school can be extra stressful for kids with learning and attention issues. A history of struggles and setbacks can increase their worries and anxiety. Kids with learning and attention issues can feel more anxious than their peers during every school transition. But moving through high school can bring a whole new level of stress.

Dana Hall McCain My daughter often gives me an update on the social goings-on in her class. Everyone in this story is eleven. It leaves me speechless, to be honest. The middle school years are a time of major transition for kids as nature forces them along the path toward adulthood. At this tender age, your child barely knows who she is and lacks the judgment to make good decisions about such a relationship. Finding out that a boy likes you makes you feel pretty and popular boosting your preteen self-esteem.

Spending time with a boyfriend or girlfriend is fun. Spending lots of time with a boyfriend or girlfriend takes you away from your friends. At this age, kids need good friends.

But ask any teenagers who are considering suicide over a bad relationship or SAT score and you’ll find them just wishing that the shit would end so they could be grown-ups already. Because while year-olds don’t have decades of debt and regret weighing them down, they do have a long list of biological and social pitfalls making their lives hell. So before you find yourself longing for those simple teen years, consider that They all know that a human body goes through massive and often grotesque changes during the teenage years, but can’t grasp that the brain is just another organ in the body, and as such, it’s also undergoing horribly awkward changes.

During the teenage years, every little calculation the brain makes is affected by a system that is in the process of trying to upgrade itself to adulthood. So while grown-ups like to bemoan how modern teenagers are always running around doing stupid shit while high on bath salts, it’s not totally their fault — the teenage brain is hardwired to make it crave what adults write off as “idiocy.

McCarthy, Principal Analyst You asked whether other states, particularly in the Northeast, have enhanced criminal penalties or other provisions in their laws prohibiting consensual sex between an adult and a minor that apply specifically to cases involving a teacher and an elementary or secondary school student.

In the Northeast, Connecticut, Maine, and New Hampshire have provisions in such laws that deal specifically with sex between teachers and students. Connecticut’s law is unusual in that it applies to secondary school students who are 18 or older. Maine and New Jersey’s laws cover a broader range of sexual conduct than Connecticut’s law. The penalties for the proscribed behavior vary widely by state. It is unclear that this provision covers teachers, according to the Legislative Council’s Office, and there is no case law on point.

Other Northeastern states prohibit consensual sex between adults and minors, but do not have specific provisions regarding teachers and students. In Massachusetts, the age of consent is New York considers a minor aged 16 or younger incapable of consenting to sexual acts, and has several offenses for sexual acts with such minors, with specific provisions when the minor is 14 or younger.

Pennsylvania prohibits consensual sex with a minor under 16 if the actor is at least four years older. Rhode Island prohibits 1 consensual sex between a minor between 14 and 16 and a person who is 18 or older and 2 sexual contact or penetration with a minor under 14 under any circumstances. Among the states in other parts of the country with specific provisions dealing with teachers and students are Kansas, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, and Washington.

In North Carolina and Ohio, as in Connecticut, these provisions apply even if the student is 18 or older.

Societal Level Strategies School violence can be prevented. Research shows that prevention efforts — by teachers, administrators, parents, community members, and even students — can reduce violence and improve the overall school environment. No one factor in isolation causes school violence, so stopping school violence involves using multiple prevention strategies that address the many individual, relationship, community, and societal factors that influence the likelihood of violence.

Prevention efforts should ultimately reduce risk factors and promote protective factors at these multiple levels of influence. Public health approaches focus on preventing violence before it starts and have been shown to effectively reduce school and youth violence. One strategy for addressing these individual risks are universal, school-based violence prevention programs, which have been proven to reduce rates of aggression and violent behavior among students.

Several strategies to enhance these relationships have been found to be effective in reducing violence. Some school-based programs also help students know how to appropriately and safely intervene to stop an escalating violent episode between peers. Many school-based programs and policies are also effective in helping teachers build healthy relationships, model nonviolent attitudes and behaviors, and contribute to a broader positive school climate, which in turn lowers the risk for school violence.

Prevention approaches that involve the family, especially those that start early, can have substantial, long-term effects in reducing violent behavior.
