Nov 26,  · We get a lot of questions on our guided catfish fishing trips with North Texas Catfish Guide Service about chumming for catfish or “baiting a catfish hole” as a lot of people like to call it and whether it is an effective way to catch catfish.

The catfish rigs illustrations, videos and instructions are some of the most popular resources on the Catfish Edge website. These questions range from those wanting to know more about selecting catfish rigs for each different species of catfish to wanting more in depth information on each of the individual catfish rigs and the best applications or what techniques to use them in. With that in mind, this page on catfish rigs was born to serve as a central location for you to find all the important information on catfish rigs in one location.

Having the right catfish bait for your target species is one of the most important steps you can take to be successful fishing for catfish. Bait selection is equally important to fishing in the right location. A little more or less weight, a different sinker or a float is not going to matter in most of these situations either. What matters is getting the right bait, in the right location, at the right time, and then you can tweak and obsess over the catfish rigs you are using but most of the time, everything will fall into place.

Variations[ edit ] In its use in the commercial crabbing industry on the Chesapeake Bay for example , a trotline is used as a variation of a setline. Webster’s dictionary defines a setline as being “a long heavy fishing line to which several hooks are attached in series. The baits are attached to the main line by simple slipknots or by shorter lines called dropper lines known as trots or snoods. Crab trotlines are usually baited with chicken necks, chicken livers, bull lips, eels or other inexpensive baits.

Maryland blue crabs are harvested by waterman on small workboats using trotlines and crab pots. When caught by trotlines, the line is set and the workboat moves slowly end to end, bringing the line to the surface where the waterman catches the crab.

After some experience with trotlines, both on my own and with some anglers who actually make a living at it, I’m inclined to avoid the argument. I don’t know if trotline fishing is “sporting” or not. I do know it’s a fun way to fish, it takes some skill, and it will put fresh catch on your dinner table. Trotlines, along with limblines, throwlines, and juglines, are all varieties of setlines.

There is no particular ability required to use the Angle Worm Harvester, but there are conditions that are more favorable. There are different kinds of Angle Worms and they live in different kinds of Soil. Nearly all Soils contain Earth Worms, so we suggest experimenting to learn what method gives the best results. Worms are near the surface in early morning, late evening or at night, but not during the heat of the day.

The Soil should be well soaked with Water and then allowed to drain for an hour or two. The Earth Worn eats its way through the soil making a hole or burrow that is from one to three feet deep. There are places where they widen the burrow so that they may curl up and lay dormant or reverse the direction of the crawl.

They do not have any eyes or ears but are sensitive to light and vibration. While Worms can pull themselves back into their holes, their normal movement is to go forward and a Worm that has started into a hole headfirst must go to the chamber at the end of the hole to turn around or eat another hole in the direction it wishes to go. They come to the surface at nighttime and feed on grass, clover or other plant life that they drag into their holes, or they- eat the vegetation and start a new hole.

There is an old tale that says catfish only eat dead things off the bottom. While they will do that, their favorite foods actually seem to be live minnows and other small fish. For example, the number one bait for big blue cats in the eastern reservoirs is big, live bluegill. I have kept some channel cats in a tank and observed their eating habits. When given a choice of live versus dead food, they always went for the live food first. It is only my opinion, but I believe catfish have difficulty catching live prey.

They just don’t seem as fast as other predators, such as bass and crappie. Plus, Mother Nature did equipment with the sensory capabilities for finding things that seems to have strong smells, or secretions. Whatever the case about their food preferences, Mother Nature also gave the catfish the ability to convert whatever they may eat into pure white, succulent fish flesh.

Circle hooks are the most popular hook for catfish. There was a time where it was relatively hard to find a catfish angler that actually used circle hooks. Lowrance Tips and Tricks For those of you that own the newer units there are a lot of hidden features that you can release to help you out while on the water. First of all download the emulators that Lowrance has on there site, I couldn’t get the to work on my computer so that’s why all the pictures show the LCX unit. You can do almost anything with the emulators that you can do with your unit, so you can play with the unit on your PC before you ever hit the water with it.

For those of you that freak out over the transducer going click, click, click, in the water while anchored down rather than shut down the unit completely you can simply go to full mapping and the sonar is shut off while your in mapping mode. While your in mapping mode, if you hit the exit button three times real fast a analog speedometer will pop up along with the miles you have traveled, I haven’t been able to figure out how to reset the odometer back to zero yet but I’m working on it.

The speedometer is fully functional and just looks cool if your out cruising on the water. Now granted my boat is never going to see mph so that also can be changed. This will then place a hidden file on the card that you will never see call ID.

One such product that is highly effective, but surprisingly foreign to many consumers, is the circle hook. One benefit of this design is fish longevity after release. Fish caught on a circle hook have a higher survival rate after being released than fish caught on other hook styles. In fact, use of circle hooks is mandatory in some regions as a way of ensuring the health of fish caught during the off-season. Fishing with circle hooks requires a different tactic than simply setting the hook with a powerful, swift motion.

Bottom Float Rig Some folks was curious about the rig I was using april so I drew a little diagram of it with photoshop and this rig is for muddy, silted in, bottoms for boat fishing but can be adapted to other styles of fishing from shore as well. I used to use balloons for this but since they’ve started making those split floats I like using those because you can put them on and take them back off the line without cutting the line.

The way I came up with this idea was back in the mid 80’s I was down at Corpus Christi, TX and a guy was fishing and he had a balloon tied on his rig. I asked him what the balloon was for and he said the cross current covers up your bait when fishing on bottom. Since then I’ve used balloons quite a bit in different ways.

This rig that I’ve been using recently has been very successful in producing fish. The reason I use this rig is because of the boat swaying back and forth. If you anchor the boat down so that it won’t sway and you get a big fish on, you’re in trouble because most of the time if you can’t get everything up in a hurry the big fish will wrap around it. With this rig all you have to do is pull the anchor up and land the fish.

This rig is designed to keep the bait from being pulled into the mud when the boat moves. When the boat moves it moves quite a bit and if the reel is locked down it drags the sinker into the mud and also pulling the baited hook under the mud. This results in very few bites. So, what you want is a rig that’ll suspend off bottom and won’t move and if it does move then it can right itself when the slack comes back in the line. On this rig the float isn’t for bite detection at all cause you don’t see it

Text Circle hooks are becoming increasingly popular in the world of catfishing but their usage is still widely misunderstood. They started out using them in saltwater applications and quickly adopted the use of them in many popular sportfishing destinations as a requirement to insure a safe release for species caught out-of-season. A gut hooked fish will be considerably less likely to survive. For years the saltwater anglers have proven the effectiveness of the circle hook, not only as a conservation aspect of catch and release but also the effectiveness of the hook up ratio.

Many catfisherman has taken advantage of this information, catching numerous trophy catfish and being able to release the giants back into the water to fight another day. We should all keep in mind that the large trophy catfish are older mature breeding stock and releasing most of them back to their environment in good shape is the right thing to do. How to use circle hooks Resist the urge to jerk or set the hook when a bite is first detected. Allow fish to travel with the bait before applying slow and steady pressure.

In order for a circle hook to work properly the fish must pick up the bait and make a turn away. Every living creature is protective of food, and its instinct is to grab the food and turn and move away and find a safe place. Just like a dog or cat, throw them some food and watch what they do: So with this imprinted instinct also within catfish, the circle hooks are very effective. All circle hooks are not created equal. There are many different brands and styles of circle hooks and size and sharpness will vary greatly from brand to brand.
